섬세하고 지적인 피아니즘으로 신화를 쌓은 아티스트로 '재즈 피아노'의 쇼팽이라고 불리기도 한다. 그의 피아노는 하프와 같은 섬세함과 소프트한 필링이 있다. 왼손 움직임의 중요성을 확대했고, 마일즈 그룹에 있던 시절에는 모드 수법을 사용해 60년대 재즈의 방향 설정에 일익을 담당하기도 했다.
독특한 화성처리 방식에다가 풍부한 창작력으로 가득했던 그는 초기의 화성어법과 후기의 리듬활용법 모두 후배 재즈뮤지션들의 교과서와도 같은 존재로 추앙받고 있다.
